Corruption is a cancer which slowly eats at the moral fabric of society racking havoc to growth and development and destroying achievements which take a long time to achieve. Africa has not been spared from this epidemic with a lot of countries being considered to be corrupt. Although the corruption levels in Africa are considered to be high, there are some countries which are fighting corruption and they deserve to be applauded for their effort.

Here are the top ten least corrupt countries in Africa. (The criteria used is 0-10 or 0-100 where 0 is the most corrupt and anywhere close to 100 is the least corrupt courtesy of Transparent International)

1. Botswana

Botswana is considered to be the least corrupt country in Africa. It has managed to fight corruption by formulating policies and having a no-nonsense approach when it comes to punishing crime associated with corruption. Botswana has a score of 60 which earns eat the top spot in Africa and comes at number 35 in the world.

2. Cape Verde

Cape Verde is also one of the least corrupt on the African continent and seems to be winning some of the battles it is waging on corruption. Cape Verde comes second in Africa with a score of 59 falling short of 1 point behind Botswana and also coming in at number 38 in the world.

3. Mauritius

Mauritius also makes it on the top ten least corrupt countries in Africa list due to the low levels of corruption in the country measuring against the level of corruption in Africa. Mauritius comes third in Africa with a score of 54 and is also currently ranked at number 50 in the world.

4. Rwanda

Rwanda shares the same spot with Mauritius due to the way it has been able to fight corruption using legislation and a policy that is ensuring that corruption is being fought on a day to day basis. Rwanda also scored 54 and also comes at number 50 in the world.

Since Mauritius and Rwanda are sharing the same spot the 4th position is left without a country and we automatically move to the 5th position.

5. Namibia

Namibia is also a country which has been fighting corruption and its efforts have managed to bear some results. Namibia comes fifth in Africa with a score of 52 and comes in at number 53 in the world. Namibia managed to beat the 50 score mark with just 2 points.

6. Senegal

Not so closely following the other top five least corrupt countries in Africa, Senegal has also managed to make it on the list. Senegal comes sixth in on the Africa continent with a score of 45 and also comes in at number 64 in the world.

7. South Africa

Africa`s most developed country has managed to make it on top ten least corrupt country list. South Africa shares the 6th position with Senegal with a score of 45 and coming in at number 64 in the world. Many would have expected South Africa to be in the top 3 but it looks like it needs to do more in order to fight corruption.

8. Ghana

Ghana also comes in after Senegal and south Africa. ghana comes eighth in Africa with a score of 43. On the world rankings, Ghana comes in at number 70. since 2006 Ghana`s score has been improving but there is a general perception that government-related corruption is largely contributing to the high corruption in the country.

9. Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso comes in after Ghana with a score of 42 falling short of a point to be tied with Ghana. On the world rankings, Burkina Faso is at number 72. Although Burkina Faso`s points are below average and considering that it belongs to the category of the least developed countries in Africa, the former has been doing well to fight corruption and its score can be expected to rise sooner.

10. Tunisia

Tunisia comes in at number 10 with a score of 41. On the world rankings, it comes in at number 75. Although Tunisia managed to sneak into Africa`s top ten least, its score falls way below average. Corruption in Tunisia is largely contributed to by the police who are ranked as the most corrupt institution in Tunisia
