On a continent where corruption is considered to be rife, Botswana has been named the least corrupt country on the continent following the latest reports by Transparency International, an anti-corruption global organization fighting for a world in which governments, businesses, civil societies and the daily lives of people are free of corruption.

Compared with most Africa countries, Botswana has managed to tackle corruption with the government spearheading the fight against corruption since the year 2002. The corruption Index by Transparency International shows that since 2006 Botswana`s corruption levels have been decreasing.

Since 2002 Botswana has been receiving a grade above 5.1 grading where 0 is the most corrupt and 10 is the cleanest from Transparency International.

Botswana is now ranked 35th in the world according to the latest charts a position which makes it the least corrupt in Africa and even better than some European countries on the global rankings.

The low corruption levels in Botswana can be attributed to its anti-corruption structures and legislation. Its prosecution rate towards corruption is also considered to be high and in line with the international standards.

In the latest African rankings, Botswana is not so closely followed by Mauritius and Rwanda both ranked 50 globally. Namibia comes in at number 4 in Africa and 53 in the world. Senegal and South Africa also come it to occupy the 5th position and 64 on the global rankings.

The top five least-corrupt countries in the world include Denmark, New Zealand, Finland, Sweden, and Switzerland respectively.

Transparency International has blamed the unequal distribution of power and wealth as some of the factors which propagate corruption in most countries in the world.
